  3. 735-kV Micoua–Saguenay line: a 262-km challenge
  • Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, December 7, 2023

735-kV Micoua–Saguenay line: a 262-km challenge

Hydro-Québec is pleased to announce the commissioning of the new 735-kilovolt (kV) Micoua–Saguenay line to ensure the reliability of Québec’s power transmission system. The new line will help meet the demand for electricity, which will increase significantly in the coming years, as detailed in the Action Plan 2035.

The Micoua–Saguenay line runs 262 km from Micoua substation in the Côte-Nord region to Saguenay substation in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region. Lasting from 2019 to 2023, its construction came together thanks to the efforts of more than 1,600 workers, 25% of whom were from the host regions, including local Indigenous communities. The project costs total $1,271 million.

The Micoua–Saguenay project generated significant regional economic spinoffs that were maximized through several initiatives to reach $81 million in Côte-Nord and $80 million in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean. These amounts include regional contracts and subcontracts that benefit a range of local economic sectors.

“I want to recognize the dedication of our employees and our suppliers and the cooperation of our partners and host communities. Thanks to their contributions, we were able to tackle the many challenges we encountered and successfully complete the project. By working together and making health and safety our priority, we delivered a new 735-kV high-voltage line that will enhance the robustness of our grid for years to come,” said Claudine Bouchard, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating and Infrastructure Officer.

As part of its Integrated Enhancement Program, Hydro-Québec also invested $5.8 million in 25 projects selected by the host communities.
