Summer holidays at the Électrium: Fun and refreshing activities!
No matter the weather, you and your family can explore electricity in its many forms at Hydro-Québec’s electricity interpretation centre.
In addition, every Monday during the summer, budding scientists can take part in free workshops led by science communicators from Profaqua.
Science Mondays!
Every Monday in July and August, the Électrium will be about more than electricity! Children ages six and up can take part in special workshops (offered in French only) designed to initiate them to science, including a series of experiments and educational games led by funny and knowledgeable facilitators from Profaqua. The topic will change every Monday, and there promises to be something for everyone: discover the incredible odyssey of a drop of water, delve into the St. Laurent, unlock the mysteries of magnetism, catch on to climate quirks, launch a special mission rocket, unearth the treasures beneath our feet, explore water chemistry through electrolysis, learn about energy in all its forms or see what happens when science and magic collide! Which will you choose?
Monday schedule
The workshops will last approximately one hour and run four times a day, at 9:30 a.m.,11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Reservations are strongly recommended since places are limited. Go to www.hydroquebec.com/visit for more information.
A passion for electricity at the Électrium
Summer is also a good time to follow an experienced guide through the centre’s four zones and explore electricity-related topics.
Find out about electricity in physical and magnetic phenomena in nature and how electricity is produced in Québec.
Then try the interactive modules to put all you’ve learned to the test. Touch the Van de Graffe generator, a sphere that produces static electricity and makes your hair stand on end, and the plasma ball, which generates tiny lightening bolts.
Discover how important electricity is to the human body. Play a new game to see how your reflexes measure up to your opponent’s and gauge your brain’s response time to stimuli.
And don’t forget to visit the curious fish that’s become the star of the Électrium. Did you know that a full-grown electric eel produces enough electricity to light 48 ten-watt compact fluorescent bulbs?

In summer, the Électrium is open from Monday to Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
