Putting off energy consumption during cold snaps is a smart move that benefits everyone!

Many regions of Québec will be experiencing severe cold over the next few days.

There are simple things you can do, without sacrificing comfort, that will help reduce the demand for electricity during peak periods, from 6 to 9 a.m. and from 4 to 8 p.m.

Some examples:

  • Lower the thermostat by a degree or two (Celsius), especially in unoccupied rooms.
  • Postpone running major appliances (especially dryers and dishwashers) by a few hours.
  • Limit the use of hot water as much as possible.

Spreading out the use of your appliances and devices over time and lowering your thermostats will enable the system to meet power demand. That way, Hydro-Québec can avoid expensive solutions to meet high demand for just a few hours each winter, which in turn avoids putting upward pressure on rates. Everybody wins!
