Press Release

Innu Nation's Claim Concerning the Churchill Falls Generating Station

Hydro-Québec was surprised to learn during their October 6, 2020 press conference that the Innu Nation had filed a statement of claim in damages against Hydro-Québec before the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The lawsuit relates to the Churchill Falls Complex in Labrador.  This Complex was built in the late 1960s and early 1970s by the Churchill Falls Labrador Corporation Limited (CF(L)Co. CF(L)Co, an affiliate of Nalcor Energy, owns and operates the Churchill Falls Complex.

Hydro-Québec will take the time necessary to review and analyze the claim of the Innu Nation. It will present its position in due course.

In closing, Hydro-Québec seeks to develop and maintain harmonious and mutually satisfying relationships with Indigenous communities in the context of activities related to its own hydroelectric generation facilities. Over the past few decades, Hydro-Québec has signed more than 40 impact and benefit agreements with various Indigenous communities in Québec.
