Press Release

Beware of emails or texts appearing to be from Hydro-Québec

Hydro-Québec encourages you to be on the lookout for fake emails or text messages that are being sent to customers on Hydro-Québec’s behalf. Scammers are taking advantage of the fact that Hydro-Québec is currently issuing refunds to its customers further to the adoption of Bill 34 by the Québec government in December 2019. If you receive this kind of email or text, do not click on any links it may contain, as they often lead to a fake website with the same look and feel as Hydro-Québec’s website or to an Interac e-Transfer site. In either case, be aware that the email or text is fraudulent.

Please note that the accelerated refund of $535 million provided for in Bill 34 will not be made by Interac e-transfer or credit card payment. Instead, a credit will be applied to customers’ bills by April 2020.

What to do if you receive a fraudulent email or text

If the email or text asks for your credit card number or other confidential information, do not provide any of it. Hydro-Québec never communicates with its customers through text messages.

If you clicked on a hyperlink and provided confidential information, contact your financial institution to close your account and report the fraud to the police.

To find out how to recognize a fraudulent email or text, go to www.hydroquebec.com/fraud-prevention.html.
